Thanksgiving, 2009 – sailing in San Diego

Traveled to San Diego over Thanksgiving weekend this year. The weather wasn’t great unfortunately – with calm fair days on Thursday & Friday and breezy, but damp days Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday we did get a chance to sail on one of the San Diego Maritime Museum’s replica tallships – the ‘Californian’. It was a fun sail, though the wind which started out strong faded during the course of the sail it was still a great afternoon. Amazing to see just how much effort and how many lines are involved in sailing even a relatively small ship of this kind.

Also got to see the BMW/Oracle Racing trimaran that will probably be competing for the America’s Cup next year -depending on the outcome of all the various lawsuits involved. Impressive piece of engineering.

‘Jack’-O-Lantern & Zero too

Halloween Pumpkins – Jack & his dog Zero.

San Diego & Disneyland, October 2009

Took a long weekend trip to San Diego & Disneyland to celebrate Kim’s birthday. Got into San Diego on Friday afternoon and flew kites in the Mission Bay park area. On Saturday we spent a nice day walking along the Pacific Beach boardwalk and then renting a sailboat in the Sail Bay area near Mission Beach. Sunday was spent at the San Diego Zoo and flying kites again. The weather was great for the whole weekend with plenty of sun and nice cool breezes.

Monday we drove up to LA to visit Disneyland – riding the various rides and seeing the ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ inspired ‘Haunted Mansion’.

Muir Family Reunion – Wyoming, August 2009

Had a fun trip to Wyoming in August for the family reunion. Got in to Billings, MT on Saturday and drove down to Buffalo for a BBQ hosted at Mark & Jennie’s place. On Sunday there was a big dinner at the Wagonbox in Story, followed by a trip to Thermopolis and a swim in the hot springs on Monday.

Kim and I went on a short backpacking trip on Wednesday-Friday, visiting Mirror Lakes just a few miles from the West Tensleep Lake trailhead.

Getting a grip…

New grips for my Sig P229 and Spyderco Leafstorm anyway.

KMW .338 Lapua Mag – New Toy!

My patience has finally paid off, a call from my dealer a few days ago let me know my long awaited long range grail had finally arrived.

Terry Cross from KMW Long Range Solutions built up this .338 Lapua Magnum. I picked Terry based on numerous recommendations from people I trust, and it looks like it’ll be a great rifle. Can’t wait to see how it performs at distance.

It’s a Surgeon XL based rifle, with a McMillan A5 stock in desert camo (should have had the KMW adjustable cheek piece installed – live and learn), a fluted Krieger barrel in a massive contour, a Rifle Basix trigger, and a Badger FTE break.

Got lucky and my local coating guy – Tim @ Alternative Firearm Coatings (highly recommended – nice guy, fair prices, good work, fast turnaround) had a little Cerakote left over from a previous job in the exact color as the coating on the rifle - enough to do my rings and magazine, everything matches up nicely now.

Now all I need are the optics and some cooler weather in the Phoenix area so I can take it out and send some rounds seriously far downrange. Thinking I’m going to do the Premier Heritage 5-25×56 scope, but want to play with one first before I spend the money – fortunately a couple of the guys I shoot with occasionally have them on order.

Cowboy Junkies

Got to see the Cowboy Junkies at the Mesa Arts Center on Tuesday night. I’ve seen them several times before, and was definitely excited to see them again – even though there hasn’t been a new album since the previous show I saw last year.

The Ikeda Theater at the Mesa Arts Center is fairly large – seating 1600, though it seems like more. I’ve attended some lectures there previously and enjoyed the venue. After the concert though, I’m not convinced it’s the best venue for musical acts. The sound was a bit hollow to me, though at least the sound guys did a better job than the previous show in Tucson. The crowd and the band were both very mellow – much more than any previous show I’ve seen them at. I was also a little disappointed that the set seemed pretty short, with no encore as they had another band following them.

On the plus side, got to hear a track of a forthcoming album that sounded great, along with a really nice Neil Young cover.

Moon

A stellar little sci-fi mystery/thriller that is really well shot and acted.  A slightly tighter edit would have made it even better – but as it is, it’s definitely worth a view.

New camp knife – Vox Ripley XL

After coming home empty handed from knife show in Montana, I recently picked up a new camp knife for use on camping/backpacking trips. It’s a custom Vox Knives Ripley XL – as far as I can tell only a couple Ripley models have been made, and only one of this larger version. This one appears to have been through a couple homes previously, but has been back to the maker for a refresh and was in mint condition. It’s a sizeable blade – around 7″ – with a pretty good heft to it, and it has carbon fiber scales, with titanium tubes & pins.

Definitely a form-following-function type of blade with not much to it besides the blade & scales. The carbon fiber scales are definitely done right though, very comfortable in the hand – just feels right. Came with a couple of nice kydex sheaths, one with a Blade-Tec Tek-Loc. It should be useful out on the trail for times where a little folder just wont cut it – so to speak. Expecting to keep this one in the collection for a long time and get a lot of use out of it.

Vox Ripley Camp Knife

Montana, June 2009

Got back recently from a fun week in Montana with our friend Warren & Jen. We decided to drive up in order to escape the high prices for airfare and so we could take our hiking & camping gear with us. Warren & Jen had just purchased a nice, almost-new Airstream trailer they wanted to try out – which made a nice break from sleeping on the ground in a tent.

From their place in Salt Lake we drove up to Bozeman, MT through the West Yellowstone area. The drive into Bozeman from West Yellowstone was a stunning descent through a beautiful canyon, with tons of trailheads and activities all along the highway. We spent a couple days in Bozeman checking out the town and doing some hiking in the Gallatin National Forest. The Lava Lake trail, was a fairly short 6 miles rountrip, but yielded a stunning alpine lake at the end of the trail.

From Bozeman we moved up to the West side of Glacier National Park. Unfortunately the Going-to-the-Sun road was not completely open and we were only able to get as far as Logan Pass. Not being able to get to the trailheads on the East side of the park, we missed out on the hike to Iceberg Lake we’d all been looking forward to.

From the West side though we were able to access some nice hikes though, including Avalanche Lake (crowded but stunning), the popular Trail of the Cedars and hike along McDonald creek. Our plans to take a boat cruise on the lake were thrwarted by an inaccurate timetable posted online sadly.

After Glacier, where we didn’t get to spend as much time as we’d have like, we headed down to Missoula, Montana for the annual Big Sky Knife Show & Hammer-in. The show was a bit bigger this year than last – with 9 knife makers in attendance and about 30 collectors. The highlight of the show for me was a beautiful bowie Don Fogg had brought. Sadly I wasn’t draw for it, but was nice to see some new work from him. I’ve been a huge fan of his knives for a long time and am fortunate enough to have several my collection already – though I’m always looking for more.

Josh Smith - the host of the show had a beautiful ivory handled, damascus push dagger that got rave reviews from everyone I talked to at the show. Larry Fuegen had several typically excellent pieces, including a signature carved ‘goblin’-style folder. Harvey Dean had one of his amazing D-Guard bowies, and lovely little slipjoint. John Young had several knives with some really beautiful stag handles. Rick Eaton, HH Frank, Owen Wood and Scott Sawby all had some stunningly detailed folders that got a lot of looks as well.

The show was at the LA Design Gallery in downtown Missoula, the same location as last year, which is a really location for a show and has a wonderful outdoor pation we took advantage of to enjoy the nice weather.

The hammer-in on Saturday was a lot of fun – getting to see the knife makers in action is always fun. Owen Wood had a great demo on making complex, precision damascus, Larry Fuegen show how to carve ivory & stag, and Don Fogg walked through making a blade from forging to grinding, to heat treating to polishing (the last part I missed as it was on Sunday and we were headed back to Phoenix by then).

Of course one of the big highlights of the weekend was the black powder bowling ball canon – which always makes people smile.
